another report with reader‘s comments
ceremony to launch its new name: The Olympic Channel. But the revelry
ended when Beijing TV host Hu Ziwei, the distraught wife of top sports
anchor and sports department head Zhang Bin, walked up to the podium,
grabbed the microphone, and accused her husband of having an
affair--behavior, she said, that would bring shame to China and to the
Beijing Olympics:
Today is a special day for The Olympic Channel, and a special day for
Mr. Zhang Bin, and for me too. Because just two hours ago, I found out
that besides me, Mr. Zhang Bin has been maintaining an improper
relationship with another woman ... Next year is an Olympic year, and
all eyes will be watching China. But as a French diplomat once pointed
out, if Chinese people don't have any humane values to present to the
world … then what does all the fuss mean?
Several men, including Zhang, tried to restrain Hu, who continued her
tirade for a full three minutes before being escorted off the stage.
Zhang then made a quick apology. The fallout for both Hu and Zhang is
still unclear, though the South China Morning Post reported that Zhang
did not host his regular Olympic program on Saturday night.
The clip, captured by an audience member's cell phone, was removed
from Sina.com, but has been uploaded to Tudou and Youtube for your
viewing pleasure.

China is a big country with 1.3 billion people. Anything could have
happened. People should not be interested and reporting this kind of
non-news. And having multiple spousal relationship is a cultural
heritage for China for many thousands of years. It is an arrangement
with Chinese characteristics suitable for the current situation in
China. Having it acting out all in front of TV audience just show how
advanced China is, especially in telecommunications, entertainment
industry, sports, and journalistic freedom. It is also a very positive
way to educate the next generation of Chinese in morality, ethics,
presentation skills, and the art of "taking advantage of the
situation", and "getting away with it".
All in all, this is great news for China, as it should be.

comment.

News should entertain as well as inform. This was an interesting
piece. The video is perhaps one of the best examples of retributive
punishment in recent years - an unfaithful newscaster being confronted
on TV.
A great start to 2008 in Beijing. There are still spontaneous moments
and events that may catch us all off guard.

Ha, ha, a rich "Tai Tai" got frustrated. "Don't get mad! Get
everything!" You look young and pretty, so find yourself your own
gigolo or lover instead. Or, report the affair to the Party and have
him checked and removed. The intra-party "democracy is the best
revenge". Besides, can't they talk through it privately? She may get
more money, the car the apartment and the cottage etc. out of
negotiations.

This so called victim wife herself, broke the anchor's previous
marriage. Back to that time, she was the one having an affair with
this man and defeated the man's previous wife. She is a gold digger.
What comes around, goes around.

What if it becomes common in China to wash dirty laundry in public? Or
what if China's powerless find out that it works to do so?
No influential person would be safe any longer.
(Mimi, I think Zhang Bin is - was - too powerful to simply have him
checked and removed simply for having an affair. If anything, this is
expected of people in his position.)
This is big news, and the wife Hu Ziwei is my new idol!

To Jin who has posted "I have to post in this thread since it is the
first time I see John Smith's somehow positive idea here, if ever, if
it is not a sarcastic comment":
Actually you are wrong. Didn't you notice the sarcistic tone in his
comment. Actually John Smith is that kind of people who has a deep
discrimination against China. He jumps at every opportunity to curse
China and its people. What is most disgusting is that he is against
not only the Chinese government but also the Chinese people. IT is
true that the Chinese government and CPC have many problems but the
Chinese people deserve a better life and a brighter future. If a
person is skeptical about China, I call him/her a skeptic. But if a
person wants everything the worst for China to happen, I call him/her
a demon.
Oh, Happy New Year to those who mean good to China.

FREEMIND: You have to forgive Jin's mistakes. He is just getting too

Zhang Bin and Hu Zhi Wei will probably be fired from their jobs. CCTV

>reality writes "This is China.". From a Western perspective, >reality
probably means the fact that a person suddenly stands up and expresses
something in a way giving us a hint that maybe Chinese society isn't
all about harmony after all. Then, this person is strongly persuaded
to disappear - from stage in this particular case.
Now, >zhu feels slightly aggressed by deducting from >reality's words
that >reality is trying to dismiss China, a country with 5000 years of
culture, as a place of immorality. I think, >zhu, the very idea of
pinpointing a country as immoral in itself is very Chinese. At the
same time, other countries have free media (regularly reporting about
affairs celeb X is having with celeb Y), and very few people in
Western countries would stand up in public and create a connection
between "Olympic spirit" and their spouse's behaviour. This is in fact
very Chinese.
Furthermore, while it seems to be a pasttime with the Communist Party
of China, being fired for an affair is rarely seen in the West (unless
you sleep with your boss' wife or are a priest in the Vatican).
Now come on! Everybody loves China somehow. Not everybody loves the
PRC's government though. But hey, do you consider the US government
internationally popular?!? We should smile about PRC government
internet sufers such as >FREEMIND (love the nic, mate!) and just
jointly anticipate the Olympic Games. And hope that the government is
smart enough to keep foreign journalists happy so they don't have to
worry about PRC's international reputation.

hey, FREEMIND - before calling for holy war against imperialist
"demons", have you ever asked John Smith why he might be full of
negative feelings about China? Or is the negative feeling itself
enough to send him to laojiao because he never understood the bright
red light the communist party has brought over the greatest nation on
earth?
gosh, you are such a beginner...
i love china. i don't have to believe that there is almost no crime in
China since the newspapers don't report about it - but i can still
love china. can you?

Big deal! So what's the big fuss about 2 unimportant TV hosts' private
sexual exploits during their leisure time.
Compare this affair to ex President Clinton's indiscreet sexual
adventure right in the Oval Office, or the sex video of one Malaysian
Health Minister or many other immoral activities of so-called famous
(notorious?) people around the world....., China is but an 'angel' in
retrospect.

The lady didn't show a video of her husband having an affair, so she
could be lying. Since she doesn't have any physical proof, she is not
to be believed. She should be jailed for disturbing the peace and
causing instability in the nation of China. She is more dangerous than
a Wseterner who fights for democracy in China.

Yes, Yadgyu, let's jail all those who are innocent until proven
guilty. Causing instability and disturbing the harmony are great
reasons to shut her up.
And since we're at it, let's also expel all those Westerners who fight
for democracy in China. And Chinese who agree with them, too.
I vote to give all the power to Yadgyu -- his/her suggestions prove
that he/she has the right politics. (beware of irony in this post)

As a Chinese I don't feel surprise some celebrities could have some
affairs. Actually this could happen all around the world(e.g. Bill
Clinton's affair as mainlander pointed out). But what amusing me is
such kind of gossip news could be linked to Chinese culture, Chinese
journalism etc. I suspect some education about generalizibility is
essential for these guys.

The second day
To be or not to be, it's a problem.
